Smoking OR Smoking up? Lighting or Booming up? Our Society is very confused on what is the right thing to do. The major chunk of population accepts tobacco. While the other half of this generation feels that marijuana is better and more valid than tobacco. Let’s analyse and see what we can deduce.
Meanwhile, let me tell you that I neither support smoking or the consumption of any other illegal substance nor do I indulge in the same. It’s just for the sake of curiosity that I’ve researched on this topic. This piece has been written to bring light to issues that are majorly plaguing the population of the country. Now let’s go forth-
I'll start off by introducing tobacco to you. Tobacco contains nicotine that is a potent parasympathomimetic stimulant and an alkaloid found in the nightshade family of plants. It is highly addictive and causes a great deal of discomfort on withdrawal. It is considered harmful by the masses, not to mention the neuro impairing effects it has on our nervous system. Now, this substance has no health benefiting qualities. Nicotine just covers the neurotransmitters in our brain and gives us a feeling of numbness. This feeling is particularly very harmful. The reason being that prolonged usage of nicotine permanently damages these transmitters. Thus, if one has ever noticed, how the hands of a routine smokershake. A smoker will also face muscle weakening. Ever observed a chainsmoker? She/He will face difficulty in walking with her/his shoulders straight. And believe me, people consider it to be worse than being medically impaired. Nicotine starts damaging the blood vessels near the lungs the very moment it is induced through the alveoli. The ‘Hit’ in tobacco is of slight numbness and gives a feeling of carelessness.
On the other hand, marijuana, also known as cannabis among other names, is a psychoactive drug from the cannabis plant which can be used for medical or recreational purposes. It is a medically approved substance by the WHO, that is known to cure major pain causing symptoms. To put it in perspective, it won’t matter if a man is kicked in the balls or if a woman is going through labour, marijuana will be equally effective. It is medically, a substitute for more addictive drugs like morphine, codeine and buprenorphine. Marijuana contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is a hallucinogen. It does not directly affect the neurotransmitters. THC has the medical formula of C21H30O2. This gets directly absorbed into the blood streams and breaks down into hydrocannabinol. People who take marijuana are believed to stay more alert and productive while under the influence. THC is also known to build up immunity. And the best part is that it does not harm the lungs or any other body organ in any way. Direct ingestion of THC helps in reducing strokes. Also, for the nicotine lovers, THC gives a much better ‘high’ than nicotine. Now, if marijuana is so much better than nicotine, why is it not completely legal? This is only because (not to make it political) our governments generate a huge amount of revenue from their collaborations with cigarette manufacturing companies. The government is not concerned with the health aspect of it all.
Obviously, there is no reason for it to be. After all, politics is a business.
In comparison, we have come to the deduce that marijuana though a drug, is still not as harmful as tobacco while also having certain health benefits. Marijuana could be legalized in India as it has been in Canada(Global Health Index rank – 30) .
Signing off for now. I am Absolute( ).
